Dunkirk residents enjoy the most affordable homeowner’s insurance costs in the state, but other towns in Western New York are not far behind, according to a study by SmartAsset, a technology and personal finance website.

The study ranked cities with the most affordable homeowner’s insurance by applying a city’s average insurance rate to its median home value.

Dunkirk landed the number one spot with an average annual rate of $ 371. It was followed by Hornell at $ 380, Jamestown at $ 384, Elmira at $ 402, Salamanca at $ 403, Buffalo at $ 404, Ogdensburg at $ 412, Niagara Falls at $ 413, Olean at $ 418 and Medina at $ 423.

Nationally, Dunkirk was ranked 337th most affordable in terms of homeowner’s insurance costs. In New York State, the average is $ 1,788. New York City has the state’s highest annual rate, at $ 5,011. The national average for annual homeowner’s insurance costs was $ 1,001. The highest rate in the country was Key Biscayne, Fla., at $ 9,625.

If you want to find the lowest homeowner’s costs in the country, you don’t have to look far. Pennsylvania is home to three of the nation’s most affordable towns: Shenandoah, $ 138; Duquesne, $ 152 and Shamokin, $ 156.
