Alice to see lower homeowner’s insurance rates

— Insurance for property owners in Alice is about to get a little bit cheaper. City leaders confirmed this week that the Insurance Services Office rating for the community improved from a 6 to a 3.

The measure evaluates a city’s ability to suppress fires. It’s based on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 meaning the city does not meet minimum requirements; a 1 designates exemplary service. The State Fire Marshal approved the rating Feb. 10, and it will take effect July 1.

City Manager Ray De Los Santos said the council has worked to purchase fire fighting equipment and improve infrastructure to improve the rating. The city’s hope was to drop the rating to a 4, so the 3 was a pleasant surprise.

“To go from a 6 to 3 is rather unusual and it is imperative to thank Fire Chief (Dean) Van Nest and his team for the work done to prepare for the inspection,” De Los Santos stated.

Only 3.4 percent of the communities evaluated by the Insurance Services Office across the country have achieved a 3 classification or lower.

According to a chart on the Texas Department of Insurance’s website, a brick home would see about a 10.5 percent decrease in homeowner’s insurance.
