With the Cocos fire just down the hill and closing in fast, Dean Toney received a call from his insurance company. He played the recording for San Diego 6 News Thursday afternoon.

The caller identified himself as being with Liberty Mutual Insurance and told Toney there was a fire in the area. and that they were there to help.

“We have a mitigation team in the area,” said the caller. “We do have free service where we come out to try and protect your homer.”

Toney said knowing his insurance company had his back during such a stressful time was a good feeling.

“I don’t have anything to worry about if something happens to the house, God forbid, they are on top of things,” he said.

But a week later, he received a far different call from his insurer. He says two days after the evacuation orders were lifted and he was allowed to return to his Washingtonia Drive home, he received a call from a woman named Julie Bamford with Liberty Mutual.

“Liberty Mutual has elected not to renew the home insurance after Aug. 26, unfortunately your home has been classified as a wildfire area. It has nothing to do with the fires that occurred last week,” the caller said.

“I’m not angry, but I am really, really disappointed,” said Toney.
